Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
- Do I need to be flexible or in shape to start?
- No! BJJ is for everyone. You'll develop flexibility and conditioning as you train. We have students of all ages, body types, and fitness levels.
- What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
- Gi BJJ uses a traditional uniform (kimono) that can be gripped for techniques. No-Gi uses rash guards and shorts with no grips on clothing. We teach both styles.
- How long does it take to get a blue belt?
- Typically 1-2 years of consistent training. However, everyone progresses at their own pace. Focus on learning and improvement rather than belt color.
- Is BJJ effective for self-defense?
- Absolutely. BJJ was designed for smaller people to defend against larger attackers using leverage and technique rather than strength.
- What equipment do I need?
- To start, just comfortable athletic wear. Eventually you'll want a Gi (we can recommend where to buy). We have loaner Gis for your first few classes.
