Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

Do I need to be flexible or in shape to start?
No! BJJ is for everyone. You'll develop flexibility and conditioning as you train. We have students of all ages, body types, and fitness levels.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
Gi BJJ uses a traditional uniform (kimono) that can be gripped for techniques. No-Gi uses rash guards and shorts with no grips on clothing. We teach both styles.
How long does it take to get a blue belt?
Typically 1-2 years of consistent training. However, everyone progresses at their own pace. Focus on learning and improvement rather than belt color.
Is BJJ effective for self-defense?
Absolutely. BJJ was designed for smaller people to defend against larger attackers using leverage and technique rather than strength.
What equipment do I need?
To start, just comfortable athletic wear. Eventually you'll want a Gi (we can recommend where to buy). We have loaner Gis for your first few classes.
